Philodendron Burle Marx Variegated is a beautiful and increasingly popular variety of Philodendron Burle Marx, prized for its striking cream, yellow, and green marbled foliage. While it's relatively easy to care for, variegated varieties need a little more attention—especially when it comes to light and stability of their variegation.

Here’s how to care for your variegated Burle Marx:

Light

  • Bright, indirect light is crucial to maintain strong variegation.

  • Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, especially the lighter variegated areas.

  • Low light can cause the plant to revert to more green (less variegation).

Watering

  • Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry.

  • Likes to be kept lightly moist, but never soggy.

  • Ensure the pot and soil have excellent drainage to prevent root rot.

Temperature & Humidity

  • Temperature: 65–85°F (18–29°C). Avoid temperatures below 55°F (13°C).

  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity (60% or more). Will tolerate average household humidity but thrives with a humidifier or regular misting.

Soil

  • Use a loose, well-draining mix, such as:

    • 1 part potting mix

    • 1 part orchid bark

    • 1 part perlite or pumice

  • You can add worm castings or compost for a nutrient boost.

Fertilizer

  • Fertilize every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer.

  • Avoid over-fertilizing—especially with nitrogen-heavy formulas—as it can encourage more green growth and reduce variegation.

Pruning & Maintenance

  • Prune off completely green leaves to encourage variegated growth.

  • Trim damaged or yellowing leaves to keep the plant tidy.

  • Can be propagated via stem cuttings with at least one node and variegation.

Growth Habit & Repotting

  • Compact and spreading—great for small spaces or grouped displays.

  • Repot every 1–2 years or when root-bound. Use a pot with drainage holes.

Common Issues

  • Pests: Watch for mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites.

  • Root rot: Caused by overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Reverting to green: Usually due to low light; prune non-variegated leaves and improve lighting conditions.
